Director, Education and Research, Victoria Hospice

Job Summary

The Director, Education and Research is a fulltime position located in beautiful Victoria, British Columbia. Working within the vision, policies and values of Victoria Hospice Society (VHS), the Director, Education and Research facilitates excellence in hospice palliative care practice across all Victoria Hospice programs through education, evaluation, knowledge translation, research and broad collaboration. The Director provides direct leadership of VHS Education and Research Departments including the coordination of services, provision and maintenance of human and material resources, and development and implementation of departmental plans, goals, budgets, and policies and procedures to ensure alignment with the Society’s strategic direction and operational plan.

The Director reports to the Executive Director of VHS and participates as a core member of the leadership team. The Director shares leadership and accountability with other VHS leaders to ensure compliance with professional and organizational standards and practices in hospice palliative care. The Director ensures there is a plan and framework for education and research including a strategic focus, partnerships, funding and relevance of all undertakings. The Director works closely with external research and education leaders, and carries out a variety of functions to enhance and promote quality end-of-life care within VHS, and at the regional, provincial and national level.

  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships both within VHS and with external organizations.
  • Highly developed and effective leadership, management and supervisory skills. Ability to perform as a leader in project management, team building and partnership development.
  • Highly developed interpersonal, verbal and written communication skills.
  • Highly developed ability to conceptualize, conduct quality improvement, education and research activities.
  • Knowledge of contemporary education technology and adult education strategies.
  • Ability to implement a framework that integrates clinical practice, education and research, and transfers knowledge and skills in an applicable way.
  • Ability to work with an interdisciplinary team that includes a variety of stakeholders including patients and families, healthcare practitioners, volunteers, policy makers and academics.
  • Ability to work flexibly as a member of a small team.

Education, Training and Experience

  • Doctorate or Masters Degree preferred.
  • Previous experience in the management of education, academic research or healthcare preferred.
  • A combination of education, research and managerial experience acceptable to Victoria Hospice will be considered.
