Senior Specialist Knowledge Management and Communications (Washington DC) – Save the Children’s Saving Newborn Lives program

A global leader in newborn health, Save the Children’s Saving Newborn Lives (SNL) program is embarking on a new phase in its efforts to reduce newborn deaths in low-income countries. A key component of SNL’s new five-year program is to integrate knowledge management principles into all of its work in order to document and inform the achievement of effective coverage of high-impact interventions at scale in targeted developing countries and to provide technical leadership to the global public health community.
The Senior Specialist Knowledge Management and Communications provides leadership for knowledge management within SNL and strengthens the learning culture across the program. The Senior Specialist seeks to identify the most relevant research, together with key lessons learned in the field, and then package this learning for target audiences across country programs and among global stakeholders. S/he takes the lead in designing effective processes, systems and tools to foster learning and facilitate the dissemination of knowledge internally and to the external newborn health community. This position is responsible for developing and overseeing the implementation of the SNL KM strategy and activities and coordinates with the SNL Director of Advocacy and Public Affairs to ensure linkages with SNL’s advocacy and communications activities. The Senior Specialist assists SNL country offices in developing effective KM and dissemination strategies, targeted communication products and materials. Further, the Senior Specialist-KM will participate in analyzing and synthesizing results and program experiences and will assist in the documentation of successful practices, including the development and expansion of appropriate web platforms. S/he is a part of the Knowledge Management team within the Department of Health and Nutrition, meeting regularly with DHN staff on KM-related issues, updating DHN staff on successful KM strategies, and contributing to technical fora related to knowledge management. The position is based in Washington D.C.
Responsibilities
• Lead the development and oversee the implementation of a comprehensive knowledge management and dissemination strategy.
• Identify and oversee the implementation of innovative approaches to disseminate information and learning to external stakeholders and expand the reach and impact of SNL’s knowledge sharing activities.
• Participate in the development of a new strategy to maximize the use of the Healthy Newborn Network and social media outlets as key dissemination channels.
• Identify and execute strategies for closing knowledge gaps within existing systems and propose streamlined approaches to advance health knowledge.
• Provide leadership for integrated knowledge management approaches, processes, and systems.
• Deploy information management and content management strategies and analyze business processes to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of knowledge sharing.
• Develop knowledge management processes, tools and structures that support decision-making, enable collaboration among home office, country offices and Save the Children implementing partners, and support program activities.
• Serve as a member of the Department of Health & Nutrition (DHN) KM team to provide input to improve the knowledge management practices within DHN and ensure SNL’s KM activities are aligned with departmental priorities. As part of the team, meet regularly with DHN staff on KM-related issues and contribute to technical forums related to knowledge management, both internal and external to Save the Children.
• Provide technical support to SNL country programs for the development of in-country knowledge management and dissemination strategies. Assist country programs with developing targeted communication products and materials.
• Provide oversight and guidance for strategic information dissemination and technical assistance for writing and editing publications.
• Ensure communications are consistent in messaging across the program and aligned with overall goals and strategies.
• Participate in the development of communications products, such as video, online, and printed publications as needed.
• Maintain knowledge of and be responsible for adhering to the SC branding guidelines.
• Maintain and foster innovations in knowledge management across the program and champion a learning culture by educating SNL on systems, processes and oversee the use of such systems through defining user protocols for posting information and ensuring KM platforms are relevant for staff needs.
• Liaise with other relevant institutions in the global health community on knowledge sharing and leveraging resources, lessons learnt, and best practices to make improvements to KM portals.
• Supervise and mentor the SNL KM Coordinator for KM, including defining SOWs, timelines and deliverables.
Requirements
• Master’s degree in communications or social sciences; emphasis information-related aspects of international development or equivalent experience strongly preferred.
• At least 7 years relevant professional experience in international development, including experience closely related to knowledge management, organizational learning and other related fields.
• Experience with web platforms (e.g. Drupal and SharePoint), electronic communications, social media, and knowledge management principles.
• Proven ability to organize and share information effectively.
• Writing/Publication expertise.
• Experience designing and implementing strategic communication plans for country-level programs and global projects.
• Experience developing global program dissemination plans, tools, and products.
• Successful planning and management of international events, including meetings and conference.
• Computer skills, including Microsoft Office Suite, SharePoint, and graphic design software (i.e Photoshop).
• Ability to travel at least 20%.
