The Commission, while funded by the Government of Canada, is a national body, not a federal one. Knowledge Broker Position
Overview TEMPORARY 1 YEAR TERM POSITION.
The Mental Health Commission of Canada (MHCC) is a national non-profit organization created with funding assistance from the Government of Canada. The mission is to promote mental health in Canada, to change the attitudes of Canadians toward mental health problems and mental illness and to work with stakeholders to improve mental health services and supports. The Commission is a multi-site, multi-initiative, multi-level organization that has operations across Canada.

Duties & Responsibilities The MHCC is seeking a highly motivated individual to help implement the organization’s knowledge exchange strategy. The Knowledge Broker is responsible for developing relationships with partners to get the right information into the right hands at the right time, and for supporting the delivery and uptake of evidence informed practices, tools, programs and products for those working in the field of substance abuse.
The Knowledge Broker, working together with departments across the Commission, Communications and Advisory Committees, draws on the existing body of knowledge, research, products and information to interpret bottom-line results and create targeted, practical tools that can change practice. Through facilitating collaborative efforts of stakeholders/partners, the Knowledge Broker encourages the application of this evidence in policy development and practice using effective knowledge exchange approaches.
Knowledge Broker duties as follows:
- – Work with projects and initiatives throughout the Commission to lead the development and implementation of knowledge exchange strategies;
- Work with the project team to summarize research findings to form the basis of appropriate knowledge exchange products, tools or activities to inform policy and program development;
- Identify and bring together key partners, subject-matter experts, practitioners and community representatives to share evidence, knowledge and best practices to build the foundation for solutions in the mental health field;
- Lead consultations with stakeholders to identify their needs in implementing research and help build their capacity through training and mentoring;
- Lead collaboration efforts with a variety of stakeholders to negotiate creative, practical and relevant approaches to knowledge exchange for long-term solutions;
Skills & Experience
- Highly motivated strategic thinker who is skilled at anticipating and resolving stakeholder relations issues;
- Superior written, editorial and verbal communication skills, including public speaking and presentation skills;
- Experience working with a variety of stakeholders to develop relationships and achieve shared goals;
- Experience in meeting and conference planning;
- Experience with various software (word processing, spreadsheets, databases);
- Strong organizational, interpersonal and written and oral communication skills;
- Experience in developing, and implementing knowledge exchange strategies;
- Ability to work flexibly and take on a variety of tasks as a member of a small team;
- Ability to set priorities and manage a heavy workload;
- Ability to take initiative, work independently and accountably in a positive manner;
- Adaptability, flexibility, diplomacy and tact;
- Excellent planning and time management skills, with ability to multi‐task, produce and coordinate projects with tight deadlines;
- Highly motivated by team work.
- Experience negotiating with multi-stakeholder groups (e.g., health professionals, the public, health care managers, private industry).
- Understanding of all aspects of knowledge exchange (e.g., generation, synthesis, product development, dissemination, exchange, management, evaluation).
- Experience in developing and implementing knowledge exchange strategies.
- Experience building relationships with partners at regional, provincial and federal levels to inform or implement best practices.
- Ability to interpret and identify key results from medical research and to succinctly summarize research findings in plain language.
- Experience in stakeholder consultation through surveys, focus groups, social media, etc.
- Ability to develop or inform the development of knowledge products such as toolkits, newsletters and policy briefs using feedback from knowledge users.
- Demonstrated experience in applying best practices in knowledge exchange (e.g., communications, education/training, toolkit development, marketing, stakeholder engagement).
Qualifications
- University degree (Master’s level preferred) in a related field and/or commensurate experience
- 4 to 6 years of related experience.
- Experience and/or expertise in the field of mental health
