The Canadian Research Data Centre Network (CRDCN) is seeking a Knowledge Transfer Coordinator. CRDCN is a key component of the social science research infrastructure in Canada. It consists of twenty-four Research Data Centres (RDC) serving more than 40 academic institutions across Canada. Through the Network, researchers are able to analyse Statistics Canada census and survey data on a broad range of issues at the heart of Canadian society. Our goal is to encourage the use of the research in order to promote evidence-based decision making in the area of public policy.
The Position: Researchers working in the RDCs publish their findings in a variety of forms – scientific articles, dissertations, research reports or books. The CRDCN collects information about these publications and makes it publicly accessible in a searchable form on the CRDCN website (http://www.rdc-cdr.ca/publications). The Knowledge Transfer Coordinator (KTC) will take a leading role in the transfer of this knowledge to policy makers, the media and the public, while respecting the intellectual property of individual researchers.
The KTC will develop activities adapted to the specific needs and structure of the CRDCN. In previous years, these have included a Communication Skills workshop to help quantitative social science researchers communicate with a range of audiences, and research syntheses designed for educated non-specialists. Going forward, the KTC can build on these projects, propose and implement new activities to advance the CRDCN knowledge transfer objectives, and seek funding to increase the Network’s dissemination potential. The KTC will create KT-related content for the CRDCN website and will work with the webmaster to develop the website’s KT potential.
The Candidate is expected to have an advanced university degree (Ph.D. preferred but Masters will be considered) in Social Sciences, Education, Journalism or in a related field. Some knowledge transfer experience is desirable. The applicant must possess excellent written and spoken skills in both official languages. The ability to interpret scientific, statistical and quantitative research findings, identify and communicate key results is essential, as is the ability to write well in a range of styles across diverse subject matters. The successful candidate will be able to meet deadlines, prioritize activities and resources and work independently and with initiative. Knowledge of a network of Federal and Provincial policy makers and key individuals in the communication outlets would be an asset.
Location and Salary. This is a full-time position but a part-time arrangement would also be considered. The KTC will report to the CRDCN Executive Director at the national office at McMaster University in Hamilton, ON. However the KTC may be located in any of the 14 cities in Canada with an RDC, subject to negotiation with the local RDC. Administrative support will be provided as required. The position is funded from grants awarded to the CRDCN by the Social Science and Humanities Research Council and the Canadian Institute for Health Research. The initial appointment will be until March, 2016 with an option of a mutually agreed upon renewal depending on renewal of funding. The full-time salary range is $65,000 – $85,000, depending on qualifications and experience.
